Why You Should Never Pop That Red Tender Bump Near Your Eye

Ever heard of an eye stye? They can be a little gross–and their resemblance to zits makes them a very tempting target for popping. But these red, tender bumps near your eye should absolutely never be popped.

WHAT CAUSES EYE STYES?

Eye styes occur due to bacteria getting into the meibomian glands–part of your eyes’ lubrciation apparatus. It starts in your eyelashes–bacteria known as blepharitis build up. This is the crusty stuff in your eyes in the morning that can sometimes cause dry eyes.

Eventually these can cause a bump along the eyelid. They’re a little painful, and they can cause astigmatism. This isn’t good, but this will resolve if you fix the eye stye.

WHAT CAN BE DONE IF I HAVE AN EYE STYE? ARE THEY DANGEROUS?

What to do about an eye stye? Go to your doctor and get antibiotics, or prescription eye drops. Putting a warm compress on your eye can help along the process of fighting the infection too.

More than anything else, however, never pop an eye stye–that’s just asking for trouble. Popping it spreads the bacteria and spreads the infection and, on a part of your body as sensitive on the eye, this can me serious issues.

In fact, the infection has the potential to spread to your brain–and that’s REALLY bad news.

So resist the urge to pop, and do what your doctor tells you. They should resolve themselves naturally.

How to prevent eye styes in the future? Make sure that you use a mild soap on your eyelids. That can go a long way in preventing them. You could even use a dedicated eyelid cleanser — making sure the follicles at the base of your eyelids are clean, in particular.
