Liposuction Q&A

How does liposuction work?

Liposuction is a minimally invasive technique that removes pockets of unwanted fat from your body. It’s not designed for comprehensive weight loss, but it can fine-tune your efforts.

When you eat well and work out, you can shrink fat cells and lose weight, but not always in the places you want. Liposuction targets areas that just don’t respond to diet and exercise.

What areas can be treated with liposuction?

At Rostami OPC, liposuction slims and contours your body and certain areas of your face. Common areas that can be treated include the:

  • Hips and buttocks
  • Abdomen and waist
  • Upper arms
  • Thighs
  • Inner knee
  • Chest area
  • Calves and ankles
  • Back
  • Chin and neck

Discuss your areas of concern and your body-contouring goals with Dr. Rostami to determine how liposuction can help.

Who is a candidate for liposuction?

You do need to be close to a healthy weight before undergoing liposuction. Usually, the best candidates are within 30% of their ideal weight. You should generally be in good health and a nonsmoker. The doctors perform a comprehensive exam prior to doing any treatment to ensure you’re a good candidate.

For your results to last, it’s important that you commit to maintaining a healthy lifestyle after your procedure. Liposuction removes some fat cells permanently, but those that remain can still swell if you gain notable weight.

What happens during liposuction treatment?

he doctors place you under local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent and type of your liposuction procedure. It is done on an outpatient basis, so you go home the same day. During the procedure, the doctors make a tiny incision in the area to be treated. A thin tube called a cannula is inserted and a vacuum is attached to suction out the unwanted fat. When the procedure is complete, a stitch closes the incision.

What is recovery like after liposuction?

You’re given complete aftercare instructions so you know how to care for your body as you recuperate at home. Expect to have some stiffness and soreness for a few days following treatment, as well as some swelling and bruising.  Most people benefit from taking about five days off work or regular activity. Avoid vigorous physical activity until the doctors clear you. Get the contoured body you’ve always wanted.
