Buccal Fat Removal

What are the buccal fat pads?

The buccal fat pads are specifically located in the lower cheeks, near the jawline. They are a normal part of the facial anatomy and help give the face its fullness and roundness. However, some people have too much buccal fat, which can give them a “chipmunk” appearance.

What is buccal fat removal?

As its name suggests, buccal fat removal is a cosmetic procedure involving removing the buccal fat pads from the cheeks. Buccal fat removal is typically performed in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as facelifts, brow lifts, and eyelid surgery.

How is the buccal fat removal treatment performed?

Buccal fat removal is a simple procedure which can be performed under local anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision inside the mouth, just below the cheekbone. Through this incision, the surgeon will carefully remove the buccal fat pads.

What can I expect from recovery following buccal fat removal?

The recovery from buccal fat removal is usually relatively short. Most people feel well enough to comfortably return to normal activities within a few days. There may be some bruising and swelling, but this will resolve on its own without further attention. Talk to the doctor to determine how much time you should take off work, school, and social activities to heal correctly.
