IPL FAQS

WHAT IS IPL (INTENSE PULSED LIGHT)?

It seems that anti-aging cosmetic treatments are filled with so many acronyms these days it’s hard to keep up. There’s a myriad of high-tech options involving lasers, radio frequencies, ultrasounds and more.

An IPL Photofacial is an approach to making your skin look younger by correcting hyperpigmentation, sun damage, redness stemming from rosacea, and vascular imperfections (vein correction).

WHAT DOES IT TREAT EXACTLY?

Like many high-tech treatments, Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is meant for the skin. Specifically, IPL is a photorejuvenation tool: it undoes damage from the sun, often called photoaging. Photoaging is primarily the result of ultraviolet exposure.

Ultraviolet exposure, due to its low wavelength, can completely bypass the epidermal layer. When it passes through the skin, it causes certain chemical changes that lead to DNA mutations: hence why we call ultraviolet rays “mutagens.”

On at least an aesthetic level, this results in the blemishes and wrinkles we associate with aging. IPL improves sun-damaged skin in many ways: improving color, texture and tone.

BUT HOW DOES IT WORK?

IPL sends out light pulses within the visible spectrum. In fact, it’s somewhat unique in that it sends out broad-based pulses (of all colors) which can then target specific colors within the skin.

How does it do this? By targeting cells with chromopores. Chromopores are the part of a molecule that determines the color our eyes see. Essentially, what we see is the color not absorbed by a chromopore and which is therefore reflected off of it.

When IPL targets cells with chromopores, its light is converted to heat, which specifically damages the cells with discoloration and signs of aging. The highly targeted nature of IPL means that it can work precisely, without excessive energy output.

Moreover, IPL therapy does not affect the top layers of the skin. It penetrates straight to the dermis. This causes a more subtle effect than the typical resurfacing of lasers and other skin therapies.
