Eyelid Reconstruction: Important Information When Considering Surgery

You may not believe it, but as many as 200,000 men and women underwent eyelid surgeries in the last year.

These procedures, called blepharoplasties, are much more common than they are talked about, and are topping out the lists of common cosmetic surgeries.

WHY WOULD I UNDERGO EYELID SURGERY?

The most common answer is that patients are tired of being told they look tired all the time.

Bagginess under the eyes, a symptom often associated with but not necessarily actually the cause of tiredness, is something that can be corrected with eyelid surgery. But is that the only reason?

Patients may also have a history of dry eye, which puffy eye bags or crepey skin can exacerbate.

Patients might also experience visual impairment — a condition that is associated more with the upper eyelid, rather than the area beneath the eyes.

WHAT TO CONSIDER IF YOU’RE CONSIDERING EYELID SURGERY

Occasionally, eyelid rejuvenation is used to treat patients who have visual impairment. Visual impairment usually comes with a drooping upper lid.

This drooping upper lid may be due to fat deposits, but it can also be due to ptosis — a condition describing the dysfunction of the upper lid muscles.

The pathology of the ptosis, whether it be simply congenital or possibly even caused by other cosmetic treatments such as Botox, is important to how the eyelid rejuvenation surgery might be performed.

Meanwhile, if patients are facing more problems with the lower eyelid and the skin beneath it (and, usually baggy eyes), then they should consider their nonsurgical options. Besides eyelid reconstruction, patients may opt for skin rejuvenation of some form, or even fillers to even out the gradient of their cheeks.
