Why Are Millennials Getting Botox and Fillers in Their 20s?

Millennials, more and more, are flocking to cosmetic treatment. This isn’t a surprise in the modern selfie era, where it seems like everyone on social media has perfect lips, perfect cheeks, and perfect everything…

But one thing that sometimes puzzles doctors is Millennials’ gravitation toward anti-aging products such as Botox and fillers.

ISN’T 25 A BIT YOUNG TO BE GETTING BOTOX?

Botox is most known as a method for reducing and preventing wrinkles. Almost synonymous with the term cosmetic treatment, when people think of Botox we usually think of older “Real Housewives” types who want to stay looking young forever.

Fillers are mostly the same, although in the popular consciousness fillers have mostly made their name as a way of plumping up the lips.

Still, they fill a lot of the same role as Botox when it comes to anti-aging. They’re effective and volumizing and minimizing the look of wrinkles.

So why are people under the age of 30 going in for both of these?

A CUMULATIVE EFFECT

For Botox, it might make a bit more sense. After all, Botox doesn’t actually directly affect the volume of the face. Instead, if relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles to form.

Wrinkles form, essentially, because our face stops producing collagen at a certain point in our lives, and starts losing volume at another point. Fillers work to fill in those gaps, but Botox works to relax the muscles that cause the ‘fissuring.’

So getting Botox early makes sense as a preventative measure. In fact, some doctors suspect it might have a stacked effect, speculating that Botox actually teaches the muscles to relax on their own.

Of course, it’s hard to say how this will play out, because until these younger millennials hit the age at which we really see wrinkles, we haven’t seen this natural experiment to its end.
