Dermal Fillers: the Basics You Should Know

We know what dermal filler can do, but what is filler  exactly?

The easy answer is that fillers do what the name suggests: they fill up the face, adding volume where there previously wasn’t any.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HYALURONIC ACID

Not all dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, but HA is the most popular dermal filler available. That’s because it’s both a component naturally made by the body, and also one that helps moisturize skin and deliver nutrients.

Most brands of filler that you hear about, however, are made of hyaluronic acid. This includes JuvedermRestylane and other popular brands.

Because filler is sometimes used to get wrinkles, its mechanism of action can sometimes be confused, and individuals might believe that fillers work similarly to Botox.

This isn’t strictly true, however. Whereas Botox works to help reduce signalling from muscles to the brain, fillers simply fill in lost volume.

Essentially, Botox stops the muscles that are causing the wrinkles, while fillers work to “fill in” those wrinkles.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR FILLERS?

Injectables are some of the least invasive treatments out there, and fillers are particularly flexible. Not only do fillers naturally wear off on their own, but if individuals use hyaluronidase then the filler can be removed before it naturally wears off and is absorbed by the body.

There are a number of aesthetic concerns that can be treated with fillers, all the way from minimizing nasolabial folds to adding more pout to the lip.

Ultimately, if you’re in good health, there’s a good chance you’re a good candidate for fillers. Talking with a doctor can help you determine what’s possible and ground your expectations.
