8 Rumors You’ve Heard About Lip Injections That Aren’t True

While many patients are becoming more comfortable with Botox and fillers, lip injections are still very misunderstood. Many people automatically think of heavily overfilled lips and the terms “Duck lips” or “trout pout.”

However, lip fillers, when performed by a skilled injector, can provide a natural result that enhances facial structure and symmetry.

To give lip injections proper consideration as a cosmetic treatment, it’s important to differentiate facts and rumors.

There are 8 common misconceptions about lip injections:

1. The results of lip injections are irreversible

Most temporary lip fillers, like Restylane, are composed of hyaluronic acid. If a patient does not like the result of the lip injection, hyaluronidase can be administered to dissolve the filler.

2. Lip injections have to be continued indefinitely or your lips will become loose and saggy

A common rumor is that the added volume provided by lip injections stretches out the lips. Consequently, patients fear that they will have droopy lips if they decide to stop the injections.

The opposite is actually true. The product in lip injections actually helps to stimulate collagen so the lips become smoother and suppler over time.

3. Fillers are only for older patients

Any patient over the age of 18 can be a candidate for lip injections. They not only replace volume loss due to aging, but also improve the shape and symmetry of the lips and smooth out fine lines around the mouth.

4. Your face will look rounder after injections

The addition of volume does not necessarily enhance the roundness of a full face. Actually, a filler like Restylane Lyft improves facial structure and adds definition which can reduce the appearance of a round face.

5. There’s no such thing as natural looking fillers

When performed by a skilled injector, filler results look natural and undetectable. The outcome of the filler relies about 90% on the provider and about 10% on the product.

It is essential for patients to do their research before selecting an injector.

6. Injections are only for people with thin lips

Lip injections do help fill out thin lips, but they also improve the proportions of the lips, highlight the cupid’s bow, correct turned down corners, and hydrate cracked lips.

7. My smile won’t be the same after injections

Many providers will address smile lines by injecting filler near the cheekbone and not in the parenthesis lines around the mouth. Consequently, movement of the mouth and ability to smile are unaffected.

8. There is a lot of upkeep for temporary fillers

For most temporary fillers, patients will require maintenance treatments. Most physicians recommend touch-ups every six months for lips and smile lines and once a year for cheeks.
