Why Dysport May Be More Effective Than Botox

DYSPORT NORTHERN VIRGINIA

Botox and Dysport are two of the most popular cosmetic injectables and are widely-known for their ability to combat the signs of aging and rejuvenate skin.

They are both neurotoxins derived from botulinum toxin, work in similar ways, and are FDA-approved to fight moderate to several wrinkles.

Nevertheless, some injectors and patients claim that Dysport has a faster onset than Botox with longer-lasting results.

New evidence also suggests that it may be more effective in relaxing crow’s feet than Botox Cosmetic.

WHAT IS DYSPORT AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Dysport is a neuromodulator that can diminish facial lines for a refreshed and youthful appearance. It works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that’s necessary for muscle contraction.

By deactivating certain muscles, it’s able to reduce facial expressions that cause skin to crease and relax wrinkles.

IS DYSPORT MORE EFFECTIVE THAN BOTOX?

A recent study published in the Journal Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery examined the effects of both injectables on crow’s feet.

More specifically, a group of 90 participants with an average of 54 received Botox on one side of their crow’s feet and Dysport on the other side.

Researchers then compared wrinkle reduction in the side treated with Dysport and the side treated with Botox.

Their findings revealed that Dysport was more effective in decreasing signs of aging when participants contracted facial muscles as much as possible.

Additionally, 2/3 of participants reported that they preferred results in the side that was treated with Dysport.

DO PATIENTS RECEIVE THE SAME DOSING OF DYSPORT AND BOTOX?

While there is not an official conversion between units of each product, most patients require 2.5-3 units of Dysport for every 1 unit of Botox. Accordingly, researchers administered 3 times as much Dysport as they did Botox.

It’s unknown if this factor played a role in the study’s results, but aesthetic experts agree that dosing for either product affects its overall efficacy.
