Botox: What It’s Like to Try for the First Time

The decision to have any type of cosmetic procedure can be very personal, especially when it comes to the face.

Patients have their own reasons for wanting to try a treatment and certain ideas about their experience and results.

Most of us have looked in the mirror and imagined erasing a few wrinkles with Botox. It seems like almost everyone, from friends to celebrities, is doing it, but what can you really expect from your first Botox treatment?

WHAT IS BOTOX?

Botox is the brand name for Botulinum toxin type A. It is known as a neuromodulator that helps muscles to relax and smooths wrinkles.

PATIENT EXPECTATIONS

Many patients experiencing Botox for the first time are hoping that the treatment will soften lines, smooth their skin, and make them look younger. Some are concerned about facial immobility after treatment or looking overly done.

HOW THE TREATMENT IS PERFORMED

During the initial Botox consultation, patients and providers should discuss the areas to target for a refreshed and natural appearance. Patients are most often concerned with wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and in the corners of the eyes.

The treatment areas may be numbed with ice or anesthetic cream, and then a series of injections is performed. The injections are often described as a pin prick sensation and fairly tolerable.

POST-CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Patients are instructed to avoid exercise that day and not to bend over or lay down for four hours after treatment. They may also notice some bruising and temporary swelling at the injection site.

RESULTS

Botox results are usually noticeable around 1 week after treatment and last for three-to-four months on average. It may take some time to get used to the reduced movement in the treated area.

Most patients are pleased with their subtle changes and even receive compliments about looking well-rested from unknowing friends and family.

THE COST

The cost of Botox is often calculated by unit of product injected or by the treatment area. It can vary between $500-$2500.
