Entropion

Entropion is when the eyelid, typically the lower eyelid, turns inward, causing the eyelashes and skin to rub against the eye’s surface. Involutional lower eyelid entropion can lead to discomfort, irritation, and potential damage to the cornea if left untreated.

What is Entropion?

Entropion typically occurs on only the lower eyelid (sometimes the upper eyelid), turning it inward toward the eye. This causes the lashes to scrape against the cornea, leading to irritation, redness, and potential abrasion. In some cases, the condition can also cause excessive tearing as the body attempts to flush out the irritation caused by the rubbing lashes.

Entropion is most common in older adults due to the natural weakening of the muscles and tissues around the eyelids. However, it can be caused by resulting scar tissue from injuries, eye infections, previous surgeries, or genetic conditions. Common symptoms of entropion include:

  • A feeling of irritation or a foreign body in the eye
  • Redness or watering of the eyes
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
  • Blurred vision due to corneal and conjunctival damage

If left untreated, entropion can lead to more severe issues, such as corneal abrasions or infections, which may affect vision.

“I can’t say enough about the excellent care I received from Dr Rostami and her office. From helping me to navigate what I needed from dermatology surgeons to repairing a large area on my eyelid that had to be removed to extract melanoma, every step of the way was professional and reassuring. Her staff is skilled, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to be around, a true measure of the positive culture Dr Rostami has cultivated. And the results were amazing.”

Candidates for Entropion

Individuals who exhibit lower or upper eyelid entropion symptoms may be candidates for treatment. You might benefit from professional care if you experience constant eye irritation, excessive tearing, or if your eyelids appear to be turning inward. Other signs include difficulty keeping the eyes open due to irritation, redness, or the feeling of something in the eye.

During your consultation at Rostami OPC, our specialists will evaluate your condition and determine whether surgical or non-surgical options are appropriate based on the severity of the entropion. Those with more advanced cases of entropion or scarring may require surgery for optimal results.

Entropion Treatment

Treatment for entropion depends on the severity of the condition and the underlying cause. At Rostami OPC, we offer both non-surgical and surgical treatment options to help alleviate symptoms and restore the normal function of the eyelids.

Non-Surgical Treatments

Non-surgical treatments for entropion may include temporary sutures or adhesive tape, which are used to gently reposition the eyelid margin and reduce the inward turning until a more permanent solution can be planned. In addition, eye lubricants such as artificial tears or ointments may be prescribed to help keep the eye lubricated and reduce irritation caused by rubbing lashes and eyelid skin.

Surgical Treatments

Eyelid tightening surgery is the most common and effective treatment for entropion. Still, in cases where scarring or other damage has contributed to the condition, more complex surgery may be required to help ensure proper eyelid positioning and improve the overall appearance and comfort of the eye.

Entropion Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery after entropion treatment depends on the type of procedure performed. Non-surgical treatments typically require little to no recovery time, and patients may notice symptom improvements within a few days. However, surgical patients can expect a recovery period of one to two weeks.

During this time, general aftercare includes using prescribed eye drops or ointments to prevent infection and promote healing, applying cold compresses to reduce swelling and discomfort, and avoiding rubbing or touching the eyes to prevent further irritation or injury. Protecting the eyes from bright light and dust is vital to reduce risk factors like irritation during recovery.

Entropion Results

Most patients experience significant improvement in their symptoms following treatment for entropion. Surgery to correct the condition typically provides long-lasting results, with a restored eyelid position and decreased irritation. The outcomes of non-surgical treatments are temporary, and additional procedures may be needed for sustained relief.
