What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, otherwise known as blepharoplasty, is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure used to correct any functional problems with your eyelids or treat the area surrounding your eyes.

Work can be done on the upper lids, lower lids, or both.

Eyelid lifts are immensely popular. Patients can have the procedure to treat any puffiness in the eyelids, under-eye bags, any drooping eyelids, or excess and loose skin surrounding the eyes.

WHO IS THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR SURGERY?

Firstly, any interested candidates should set realistic goals for themselves. Talk these out thoroughly with your plastic surgeon and the doctor will give you an honest evaluation.

Candidates need to be in good health and nonsmokers. They should have no serious eye conditions or medical conditions that may impede the healing process.

It is also important to remember that sometimes a drooping upper eyelid covering a part the eyeball could be the result of eyelid ptosis. That will require a different operation – not an eyelid lift.

RECOVERY

There is often some initial swelling and bruising. This is nothing to be worried about. Neither is any irritation where the incision was or a case of dry eyes. Lubricating ointment and cold compresses will be applied. Sometimes your eyes may be covered with gauze.

Protection from the sun is important too. The use of dark sunglasses is recommended until the healing is completely.

Your plastic surgeon will provide specific instructions following the procedure, including medication and how soon to schedule a follow-up appointment.

So as to be doubly sure you’re best prepared to take care of your eyes, ask your doctor these questions beforehand:
