Kybella: Does Fat-melting Injection Really Work?

Until recently, surgery was the only way for patients to reduce a double chin. However, now excess submental fat can be treated with several non-surgical options including CoolSculpting, Thermage, Ultherapy, and Kybella.
Kybella is composed of deoxycholic acid and is injected to various points of the chin to destroy fat cells. The body is then able to naturally eliminate these fat cells over the next few weeks.
When it was first introduced as a double chin procedure, it promised minimal discomfort and swelling and excellent results. Many patients interested in Kybella are asking if its really as easy and effective as it claims.
FACTORS THAT MAY INFLUENCE PATIENT EXPERIENCE WITH KYBELLA
Several variables that may affect patient outcome with Kybella include age, whether the submental fat is due to genetics or weight gain, the number of treatments, and the amount of Kybella injected.
Most patients receive two to four treatments spaced a month apart. Participants in Kybellas clinical trials completed six rounds of injections and 79% reported satisfaction with their results.
PAIN OR DISCOMFORT LEVEL DURING THE PROCEDURE IS VARIABLE
Some patients may experience a burning feeling lasting approximately 10 minutes. Ice is often used to help relieve this discomfort.
Other Kybella patients report a stinging sensation with swelling immediately after the injection. The treatment area can also feel hot to the touch post-procedure.
RECOVERY FROM KYBELLA CAN RANGE FROM DAYS TO WEEKS
While one patient can have significant swelling for up to two weeks, another may only experience minor swelling for a few days.
Bruising may also occur and can be reduced with an in-office treatment.
The amount of Kybella and number of injections can affect results and patient satisfaction
In a comparison of two patients, the individual who received a larger amount of product and more injections had a higher level of satisfaction after one month. This same individual noted her double chin was totally gone after three treatments.
The patient that received a lesser dose, reported that her double chin was noticeably better after her third treatment.
Additionally, some patients may need to combine Kybella with skin tightening treatments to significantly reduce their double chin.
RISKS
Kybella risks include swelling, bruising, nerve injury, and trouble swallowing.
