How to Take Care of Your Skin Post-laser
Many patients turn to laser procedures to treat fine lines, wrinkles, scarring, and overall tone and texture.
Even though these treatments are non-invasive, certain precautions need to be taken post-procedure to ensure safe and effective healing.
Top aesthetic physicians recommend five ways to take care of your skin after a laser treatment.
1. AVOID SUN EXPOSURE AND SHIELD SKIN FROM HARMFUL UV RAYS
Laser and other cosmetic treatments are best performed during the winter when patients are less likely to have prolonged and intense sun exposure. However, patients should always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 30 SPF after a laser procedure.
Patients may also consider wearing hats, sunglasses, and other clothing as an additional layer of protection from the sun.
2. REDUCE INFLAMMATION
You can reduce inflammation by applying ice packs for 24-48 hours after treatment and sleep slightly elevated with an additional pillow under your head.
3. STAY AWAY FROM HARSH FACIAL PRODUCTS AND HEAVY MAKEUP
After a laser treatment, skin is highly vulnerable to any sort of irritation. Patients should use gentle cleansers and avoid those that are acid-based.
Physicians also advise not to chemically or manually exfoliate for at least 2 weeks.
Additionally, patients should discontinue any topicals or retinoids for five-to-seven days before and after laser treatments. Makeup should be used sparingly for the first few days and applied lightly when worn.
4. MOISTURIZE PROPERLY
Post-laser, patients must keep skin hydrated and moisturized. An occlusive product like Aquaphor is highly recommended and should be used consistently during the recovery process.
Failure to moisturize can cause skin to scab and may result in hyperpigmentation and scarring.
5. MANUAL EXFOLIATION 2 WEEKS AFTER TREATMENT
Many providers suggest patients have dermaplaning or microdermbrasion to remove any additional transitional skin.
