How to Know if That Pimple is Really a Stye

Watch out when you’re popping zits, folks. While not every dermatologist agrees this is the best way to get rid of zits, many people do it — and that’s fine. But if you get a ‘zit’ on your eye, it’s definitely not a zit at all, and you definitely shouldn’t pop it.

What is it, and why shouldn’t you pop it?

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EYE STYES

What you have on your lid is what is colloquially known as an eye stye, although ophthalmologists know there are actually two types of styes, called chalazions or hordeolums. Both are firm spheres on the eyelid, but the former doesn’t’ tend to be as tender.

Of course, there’s not a unanimous consensus as to what constitutes the former or the latter. And patients don’t always come with a lump on their eye that fits neatly into one box — that’s why we refer to them all as styes.

So why do doctors stress out about the stye types? Because whether it’s a chalazion or hordeolum tells you how inflamed the eyelid is.

WHATEVER THE CASE, YOU DEFINITELY SHOULD NOT POP IT

In case all of this is confusing you, know this: if it’s on your eye, it’s a stye. There’s no such thing as acne on the eyes because it’s simply not the right kind of gland. Acne can form near your eyes, but it’s not going to form on your eyelid.

What does this mean for you? Definitely, definitely do not pop it, no matter whether you think it’s a zit or not, because it’s precisely the “or not.”

One quick word of warning: if you keep getting a stye in the same spot — as in you’re treating it but it comes back — it may be a sign of skin cancer. Make sure to get it checked out at the doctor, even if you think it’s just a stye.
