3 Important Types of Eyelid Surgery in Northern Virginia

EYELID SURGERY RESTON

Depending on the individual’s aesthetic and/or functional concerns, a plastic surgeon may perform an upper, lower, or combination eyelid surgery.

Excess skin, puffiness, bags, and wrinkles can make the eyes look tired and aged. Fortunately, patients have several options for eyelid surgery, which is commonly referred to as a blepharoplasty.

Here’s what you need to know about these three types of blepharoplasties.

WHAT IS A BLEPHAROPLASTY?

A blepharoplasty is a surgical treatment that improves the appearance of the eyes and allows patients to look younger and more refreshed.

It can also improve a patient’s daily functioning and quality of life by restoring vision that has been impaired by sagging eyelids.

This procedure may involve excising loose skin, fat, and muscle from the eyelid.

UPPER EYELID SURGERY

Upper eyelid surgery may be performed for cosmetic reasons, but is often related to functional issues.

More specifically, loss of collagen and elasticity can cause a droopy upper eyelid.

When this sagging skin extends into a patient’s field of vision, it interferes with sight and limits activities such as reading, writing, and driving.

By removing excess skin, fat, and muscle, an upper eyelid blepharoplasty can improve the contour and openness of the eyes and help patients to see clearly again.

The success of the surgery relies heavily on excising a precise amount of tissue, and it’s essential to be treated by a skilled and board-certified plastic surgeon.

Treatment time is approximately 1-2 hours, and downtime is 1-2 weeks. Results last up to 8 years or longer.

LOWER EYELID SURGERY

A lower eyelid blepharoplasty is typically performed for aesthetic improvement.

It reduces crepey skin, bags, and bulging fat from the under eye by excising skin and removing or repositioning fat. Muscle may or may not be removed during this surgery.

This type of eyelid surgery can be performed in 1-2 hours, and recovery can take 10 days to 2 weeks. Results last up to 8 years or longer.

COMBINATION EYELID SURGERY

During a combination blepharoplasty, the upper and lower eyelids are repaired and rejuvenated, and a brow lift may also be performed to correct wrinkles above the eyes.

This surgery may take a little longer and last 1-3 hours, and the healing process can require 10 days to 2 weeks.
