Pre and Post-op Guide to Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery in Northern Virginia is an excellent option for patients that want to revitalize tired eyes and achieve a more refreshed and youthful appearance. However, in order to optimize results and minimize risks, it’s important that patients properly prepare for their procedure.

So, what needs to be done before and after a blepharoplasty in Northern Virginia?

Here’s everything you need to know about pre and post-op instructions for eyelid surgery in Northern Virginia.

PRE-OP FOR EYELID SURGERY

2 WEEKS BEFORE SURGERY

There are several precautions that patients need to take at least 2 weeks before undergoing eyelid surgery.

To start, you should not use any blood-thinning medication or products, including: Aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications), Vitamin E, herbal supplements or any medications containing these compounds.

However, if you do require pain relief during this time you are free to use acetaminophen (Tylenol or generic equivalent). Also, it’s fine to take your daily multivitamin.

Patients should take care to avoid smoking 2-4 weeks before and after eyelid surgery. This pre and post op for eyelid surgery instruction is crucial, as smoking can increase the risk of intraoperative issues and delay healing.

You should also avoid sun exposure and wear a daily broad-spectrum sunscreen with a 30-50 SPF.

THE DAY AND NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY

The day before surgery, ensure that you have picked up all of your prescriptions and post-care essentials like gauze and ice. You should also confirm that a friend, family member, or other responsible adult will be driving you home after surgery and staying with you for the next 24 hours.

It’s important that you do not eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight the night before your surgery.

POST-OP FOR EYELID SURGERY

48 HOURS

Immediately after eyelid surgery, you should apply gauze pads dipped in ice water to eye and cheek area. Doing so for the first 48 hours helps reduce swelling and discoloration.

Keeping your head elevated with a recliner or an additional pillow in bed will also alleviate inflammation. Swelling should gradually resolve in the next 2 weeks, but can take up to 6 months to fully subside.

3 DAYS

You may resume light walking three days after surgery. Aerobic exercise, weight training, heavy lifting, and straining may be gradually resumed three weeks after surgery.

1-3 WEEKS

You may wear contact lenses two to three weeks after surgery. Make-up use may also be resumed 7-10 days after surgery.

6 WEEKS

Patients should be vigilant in avoiding sun exposure for 6 weeks after surgery. This includes wearing a daily broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 30 SPF, hat with a wide brim, and dark sun glasses.
