Xanthelasma Reston

Xanthelasmas are cholesterol deposits within the skin. These deposits can occur due to elevated cholesterol deposits, however they may also occur in the setting of normal cholesterol levels.

They tend to occur around the eye, usually in the corner of the eye (near the nose). The best way to prevent progression of these deposits is with normalization of cholesterol levels (if cholesterol levels are elevated).

However, once the xanthelasma has occurred, they usually do not regress with normalization of cholesterol levels.

The only way to successfully treat a xanthelasma is with surgical excision. Removal of xanthelasmas by an inexperienced surgeon can lead to unwanted effects such as scarring and change in eyelid position.

We recommend seeing one of our experienced surgeons for a consultation.
